Jealousy

Experiencing jealousy is never fun. There is the overwhelming feeling that life just isn't fair, the gnawing frustration, and even periods of self loathing. What many people don't realize is that jealousy isn't always a petty feeling that's easily dismissed. Like chronic depression, anxiety, or anger, it is a condition that should be treated in steps. Here are a few examples of how you can overcome your own feelings of jealousy.

The first step is acknowledging that you are jealous. This can be difficult for many, as this means learning that your anger isn't always righteous or fair. However, by realizing this, you can begin the process of overcoming it. In the long run, the epiphanies that result from this process is ultimately more satisfying than learning that you were right to harbor such feelings against another person.

Once you've realized your jealousy, it's time to dissect the situation. In doing this, you may find hat your situation, while unfair and reasonably upsetting, is inevitable. For example, your coworker may win the lottery or get promoted to a position you've been wanting. In such situations, simple blind luck may be the reason someone else was picked instead of you.

In some cases, it may be more than simple circumstances that kept you from what you desire. These scenarios are often harder to overcome, as the reason is based on your own actions or lack thereof. For example, you may have not been picked to play on a sport's team because you simply didn't play hard enough during tryouts. It's easy to slip into feelings of frustration or self loathing when dealing with situations like these, but many are able to overcome their jealousy by using these failures as a reason to try longer and strive more. In looking at this situation as an opportunity to improve yourself, you can use your jealousy as a motivational tool.

Regardless of the source of your jealousy, it is crucial that you don't dwell on the experience. After all, life is too short to spend it wishing you were different or moping over situations you have no power to change. This may be easier said than done, but in the long run it is generally healthier for you both physically and mentally to simply let some matters go. In looking at your life in a more optimistic light, you will be able to let go of your jealousy easier.

These are only a few ways to overcome your jealousy. Don't be afraid to vent your troubles to your friends or family or even a therapist. The simple act of talking out your feelings will help enormously in lifting the weight from your chest. Learn more today!
